Toning Shoes: It's Your Call

USA Today had this article about the phenom toning shoe. The question about whether or not the shoes work is your call. USA Today does a great job exploring the myths and truths about the shoe. After reading reviews about the different toning shoes, I would say the consumer consensus is mixed. Some say they feel like they did just work out after taking them off at the end of a day. Others say they just like them and don't notice any "toning" going on.

I have never tried a toning shoe and have never believed in the marketing ploy to keep people out of a gym or other type of workout---we all know that just does not work!
In the article one women said she was walking, rolled funny and sprained her ankle within 20 minutes of wearing the shoe. I would submit that this can happen in any shoe and is not "toning" shoe specific.

Bottom line (in my opinion): don't trade in your gym membership for a pair of these shoes.

LUCY: Distance Knee Pant

Today (June 3) arrived a much anticipated packag in the mail. (What package isn't anticipation worthy, right?) Well this package was one of those I check the door just to make sure I didn't miss anything. THAT kind of package!

In it was the Distance Knee Pant that LUCY sent me. Remember them from this post? This running knee pant comes out the last week of June- this month. This pant is a runners dream. Just wearing the pant around the house when I got them I really felt like I could run farther. (You think I'm joking, but you would be wrong.) Seriously, there is not bulk behind the knee to irritate it which you might expect with a knee pant. Instead it has a breathable mesh material that stays put. A nifty little pocket for your iPod or a gel shot is sewn on the back of the pant-great feature! I also am conscious of sun damage and this pant has an SPF 30+.

This knee pant feels weightless on your body and looks stylish, too. I love the slightly gathered material on the sides of the knee and hip. It makes it look like you have some room in there! The colors of the pant sent to me are navy blue with hot pink stitching. There is also a geometric pattern just below the waist in pinks and blues. A stylish pant and great product soon to come out by LUCY! Try as I might, I could not find anything negative to say about the Distance Knee Pant by LUCY.

I will post a picture of me in the knee pants shortly. Nothing like a great pair of pants to keep you motivated to get your workouts done!

Motivation Monday

Nothin' like a good weekend break!
Tons of yard work, sewing, and hangin' out with the fam!

After a long weekend, how do you re-motivate yourself? I'd like to know.

Here's my advice: It is never an option to opt out of FITNESS. It is essential to your health, both physical and mental and perhaps spiritual. Whatever your method of FITness, choose to do it regularly, consistently, and give it your best each time.

Getting in a workout slump can be hard to get out of.

TIP: Keep a notebook recording how you feel before and after each workout. Choose to re-read your journal entries to remember the adrenaline rush, the feel of success, and the reward for a good workout. It will motivate yourself to get back on track. You can use a stack of notecards hole punched and held together with a ring, or you can purchase one of the jounals below.

GOAL: Start your workout journal. Get out of a slump. Do a workout you know you love. Spend an hour a day working out one way or another. You know you want to, just FIT it in!

Importance of Water

We've all heard of the guidline: drink 8 glasses of water a day. Are you doing it? I have a Nalgene bottle (or 10) and my goal is to drink 2 full Nalgenes (64 oz.) of water everyday. I do better some days than others, but I try to get close.

Water does a lot to keep our body in proper working order. It transports nutrients, provides structure and protection, helps in chemical reactions, and it is also important to regulate body temperature.

Blood is 90% water and carries oxygen and other substances and nutrients to areas of the body that need it. It also takes waste products away and gets them out of the body. As we exercise our need for oxygen increases-we all know that, right? That is why water is important: it transports oxygen through the body.

Muscle is 75% water and bone is 25% water: water is EVERYWHERE! It acts as a cleanser, lubricant, and a protector (like in your eyeballs and spinal cord). Water helps to puff up cells, too. Makes our skin (the cells that make up our skin) look healthy, glowing, and tight. That's reason alone to drink water, right ladies?

When we exercise tons of chemical reactions are taking place to give our muscles the energy they need to keep on working. The chemical reactions are quite complex, but just know that without water, they wouldn't be able to happen. We would run out of energy very quickly! It also aides in eliminating the acid that builds up during exercise and gives us the ability to keep exercising.

When we exercise we sweat (although I rarely sweat tons-my body is ALWAYS and FOREVER COLD!)and the water helps to keep our body cool. Sweating is essential in cooling the body, it is heat leaving the body. I'm always cold, therefore my body does not have need to sweat as much. I could be in the middle of a huge hill while cycling working my guts out (almost literally) and get goosebumps because I'm cold. Go figure!

GOAL: DRINK 64 OZ. OF WATER TODAY AND EVERYDAY. NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR SKIN, YOUR ENERGY, AND YOUR ABILITY TO EXERCISE LONGER AND HARDER!

Motivation Monday

It's Monday again! Time to get your pumped up for another week of FITness.

How long have you done the same routine? Are you getting bored with it? You are more likely to stay motivated if you switch it up a bit. Don't go into the new "routine" blindly. Still have a plan, just make multiple plans. Rotate through them to keep you excited and energized and of course motivated to keep finding time to FIT it in.

Pick a different cardio option: running, walking on an incline or faster, bike. If you go to a gym, try a new weight machine, or new weight training routine.

One of my favorite things to do at a gym is trying new classes. Different instructors teach differently and attending different classes get you excited to try something new.

Perhaps you don't attend a gym, switch up your scenery. If you do only videos, move your workout outside. Join a group that works out outside.

Just last Thursday I was at a park and a bunch, I mean a WHOLE LOT, of people came out to do yoga, running group, and walking group. I even saw at a different park a group of just 3 moms and their kids doing exercises together with just a few pieces of equipment.

It doesn't take much to switch it up. Find out what works for you and let us know how you switched up your "routine" to work for you!

Now get down and give me 20. 20 squats that is! Then do 2 more sets throughout the day.

Circuit Training

Ever since I started doing the 30-Day Shred with Jillian Michaels (are you tired of me talking about that yet? Too bad, it's the greatest.) I have totally enjoyed doing circuit training. Not only does it cover all you need in a workout, it really tones you up and leaves you feeling like you've spent all day in the gym when you've only spent 20-60 minutes.
Here is the formula for a good circuit:
3 minutes of cardio + upper-body move + lower-body move + ab flattener = 512 calories burned in an hour.

You can do the same circuit over and over for an hour or you can make 3 circuits and rotate through them for an hour. This is great for not getting bored or tired of the same old thing. With the nicer weather we are experiencing it is great to get outside and try this out.

Need help building a circuit? I'll help you. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you back moves that will whip you into shape in no time!

Perhaps circuit training will become your new addiction!

Something New

This summer why do you venture out and try something new? Take your family and make it an event.
Never gone hiking, white water rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, or camping? Use your summer to try out these adventures. Talk to people to get information on the activity, borrow stuff from others, and do something new. Your family just might have a new activity to do together.

For rock climbing, check out a gym near you and schedule a time to go in and learn the sport.
Go to REI and ask the employees about hiking, camping, kayaking, white water rafting and there will for sure be someone there to help you out. REI also offers trips you can go on with a guide and all the goods.

Check out a hiking book at the library that has local hikes. You'll be sure to find one that will suite your family. One Saturday I loaded up the kids, while the husband went sky diving, and drove them to a hike. I carried one child on my back and encourage the other all the way UP. That's right, UP. At 4 years old she made it and enjoyed it. The hike was about 3 miles round trip. I have that memory with my kids and love to think back on it. I've taken them out a couple other times and we just enjoy being out of doors. It helps when they have a Camelback to carry themselves to make them feel like a real hiker. Both of my kids have these (there is a pink one for girls, too) and LOVE them.

There are so many ways to spend the summer, why not do something outside and create lasting family memories doing something "extreme"?!
Tell us about your family adventures that you plan on doing or have done in the past!
FITting it in will share amazing tips on how you can incorporate exercise and nutrition into your hectic and crazy life.
You're body won't know what hit it after you learn all the tricks of sneaking those exercises in during your day. In the car, at the store, through the house, walks around the block...
keep on reading, get hooked, and most importantly FIT it in!
